HB440 Summary

• Terminates use of Common Core State Standards, Alabama College- and Career-Ready Standards, and any variants thereof in K-12 public schools.

• Requires State Board of Education to replace Common Core standards for Math and English Language Arts with pre-Common Core courses of study (Math standards from May 2011 and English Language Arts standards from May 2012) to be known as Alabama Course of Study Standards.

• Prohibits State Board of Education from adopting national standards from any source (including Next Generation Science Standards, History, Social Studies, or Sexuality Standards) or requiring use of assessments aligned with national standards.

• Prohibits public school officials and counselors from implementing programs that steer students toward specific career tracks or using American School Counselor Association Competencies and Indicators for student social and emotional development programs.

• Grants any Alabama resident standing to sue in state courts to enforce the act; takes effect immediately upon Governor's approval.
