Nonviolent offenders in county and municipal jails may earn sentence reductions by picking up litter along public highways, roads, streets, rights-of-way, sidewalks, walkways, and waterways.

Sentence deductions accrue at one full 24-hour day for each eight-hour work day spent picking up litter.

Municipal chiefs of police and county sheriffs must adopt policies consistent with this litter pickup incentive program within 90 days of the bill's effective date.

"Nonviolent offender" is defined according to Section 12-25-32 of the Code of Alabama 1975.

The bill becomes effective on the first day of the third month following its passage and approval by the Governor.
