HB481 Summary

• Amends Section 11-43D-14 of the Code of Alabama 1975 to authorize Class 5 municipalities organized under Chapter 43D to employ clerical assistants for city council members.

• Allows city council by ordinance to provide for employment of a clerical assistant for council members without regard to civil service or merit system requirements.

• Clerical assistant shall serve at the pleasure of the council and may be appointed independently of the city's civil service or merit system.

• Becomes effective on the first day of the third month following passage and approval by the Governor, or upon becoming law.

• Passed by House on March 30, 2021; amended and passed by Senate on April 8, 2021; concurred in Senate amendment by House on April 15, 2021.
