HB505 Summary

• Amends Alabama Code Section 32-5A-80 to require the Department of Transportation to install signs notifying drivers of restrictions on using the leftmost lane on interstate highways.

• Prohibits vehicles on interstate highways from remaining in the leftmost lane for more than 1.5 miles without completely passing another vehicle.

• Provides exceptions allowing leftmost lane use during traffic congestion, inclement weather, hazards, compliance with traffic control devices, left exits, toll payments, emergency vehicles, and highway maintenance operations.

• Requires signs to be placed within the first two miles of each interstate highway entrance in the state and, where practical, every 50 miles thereafter, with flexibility for placement adjustments to avoid conflicts with existing signage.

• Becomes effective on the first day of the third month following passage and approval by the Governor.
