HB81 Summary

• Amends Sections 16-25-14 and 36-27-16 of the Code of Alabama to allow hazardous duty time to be used in calculating years of service for inservice death benefits for firefighters, law enforcement officers, and correctional officers.

• Permits hazardous duty time to count toward the 25-year service requirement for calculating survivor death benefits, even if the member has not otherwise attained 25 years of creditable service.

• Applies specifically to death benefits paid under Options in the Teachers' Retirement System and Employees' Retirement System of Alabama for eligible hazardous duty personnel.

• Becomes effective immediately upon passage and approval, with retroactive application to January 1, 2021.
