HJR28 Summary

• Extends the Alabama Task Force on Veterans' Suicide through the final legislative day of the 2022 Regular Session to continue investigating causes and prevention of suicides among returning Alabama veterans.

• Aligns the task force efforts with the Governor's Challenge to Prevent Suicide among Service Members, Veterans, and Their Families, a federal program sponsored by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

• Requires the task force to collaborate with the Governor's Challenge to develop recommendations on identifying areas of need, screening veterans, improving care transitions, educating providers on lethal means safety, and conducting community outreach.

• Mandates the task force present findings and legislative recommendations to the Legislature by the final legislative day of the 2022 Regular Session, after which the task force dissolves.

• House adopted February 11, 2021; Senate adopted March 9, 2021.
