Alabama House of Representatives urges members of United States Congress to enact federal legislation granting statehood to Washington, D.C.

Resolution notes District of Columbia has population of approximately 712,000 residents as of 2020, comparable to states like Wyoming, Vermont, Alaska, and North Dakota.

Residents of Washington, D.C. pay more federal taxes than residents in 22 states and serve in U.S. armed forces but are denied full representation in Congress.

District of Columbia residents passed a referendum on November 8, 2016, with 86 percent favoring statehood, and the Washington, D.C. Admission Act (H.R. 51 and S. 51) has been introduced in the 117th Congress.
