• Eliminates the requirement that sheriffs be appointed as guardians or conservators of protected persons when no other suitable person is available.

• Amends Section 26-2-50 to remove language mandating sheriff appointment as conservator in the absence of other qualified candidates.

• Amends Section 26-2A-138 to explicitly prohibit county sheriffs, deputy sheriffs, and sheriff's office employees from serving as general guardians or conservators, even when no other fit person applies.

• Repeals Section 26-2-27, which previously authorized sheriff appointment as guardian for minors.

• Becomes effective on the first day of the third month following passage and gubernatorial approval.
