SB14 Summary

• Requires the Alabama Peace Officers' Standards and Training Commission to provide at least 16 hours of Mental Health Awareness/Crisis Intervention Training as part of required academy curriculum by January 1, 2022.

• Mandates that law enforcement officers certified prior to January 1, 2022, must complete the Mental Health Awareness training program by January 1, 2025.

• Requires the commission to annually review and update the training to reflect current changes and trends in mental health awareness for first responders.

• Authorizes the commission to adopt rules for implementing and administering the training requirements.

• Becomes effective immediately upon passage and approval by the Governor.
