SB155 Summary

• Amends Alabama Code Sections 13A-3-20, 13A-3-25, and 13A-3-27 to expand the right to use deadly physical force in defense of premises.

• Allows persons in lawful possession or control of premises to use deadly physical force to prevent criminal mischief or burglary when an active riot is occurring within 500 feet of the premises.

• Maintains existing rights to use deadly physical force to defend premises against arson and non-deadly force against criminal trespass.

• Makes technical and non-substantive revisions to update language to current code style, including gender-neutral pronouns and grammatical updates throughout the self-defense statutes.

• Becomes effective on the first day of the third month following passage and approval by the Governor.
