SJR5 Summary

• Creates the Farm-to-Schools Task Force to study and develop a farm-to-school food program that purchases fresh vegetables and produce from local farmers and producers to address food shortages in Alabama public schools.

• Task force shall consist of 4 senators appointed by the Senate President Pro Tempore, 4 representatives appointed by the House Speaker, 1 governor appointee, the Superintendent of Education, the Commissioner of Agriculture and Industries, and the Director of Finance.

• Requires appointing authorities to ensure task force membership reflects diversity of gender, race, and geographical areas of the state.

• First meeting must be held no later than December 1, 2022, with members electing one co-chair from the House and one from the Senate.

• Task force shall submit a report with findings and legislative recommendations to the Legislature by the last legislative day of the 2022 Regular Session, at which time the task force dissolves.
