Amends Section 13A-6-21 of the Code of Alabama 1975 to add a new subsection (8) to the definition of assault in the second degree, making it a Class C felony to intentionally cause physical injury to any person operating a vehicle that provides transportation in a city or county (including public/private bus, train, Uber, Lyft, taxicab, or other ride share) during or as a result of performing their duty.

Maintains assault in the second degree as a Class C felony, consistent with existing law.

Clarifies that off-duty peace officers performing lawful duties in approved uniforms with employing agency approval are considered to be performing a lawful duty for purposes of assault protections.

Excludes the bill from constitutional amendment requirements for local expenditures because it defines a new crime or amends an existing crime definition.

Bill becomes effective on the first day of the third month following passage and approval by the Governor.
