HB381 Summary

• Eliminates a $12,000 annual expense allowance for the Blount County Sheriff that was established in 2000.

• Sets the annual salary for the Blount County Sheriff at 90 percent of the annual base salary of the county judge of probate, effective upon the expiration of the current sheriff's term.

• Requires appointed and elected Blount County Sheriffs to be U.S. citizens, county residents for at least one year, registered voters in the county for at least one year, and possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent.

• Mandates that Blount County Sheriffs be at least 25 years old, have three or more years of prior full-time law enforcement experience with arrest authority, and have never been convicted of a felony.

• Exempts supernumerary sheriffs from the qualification requirements and becomes effective immediately upon passage and approval by the Governor.
