The Equal Justice Initiative collaborates with communities to memorialize documented victims of racial violence and foster dialogue about race and justice.

The Lee County Remembrance Project was created by Ashley Brown and Olivia Nichols, Auburn University doctoral students, to research and commemorate four Black men victims of racial terror lynchings: John Moss, George Hart, Charles Humphries, and Samuel Harris.

In summer 2018, researchers began investigating newspaper articles and census records; by fall 2019, the project was accepted as an official Community Remembrance Project through the Equal Justice Initiative.

A historical marker honoring the four victims was installed in historic Opelika on June 12, 2021, to serve as a place of public healing, acknowledgement, and unity.

The House of Representatives commends the Lee County Remembrance Project and offers sincere best wishes for continued success in future endeavors.
