Auburn University was established in 1856 and reorganized as a state institution and the South's first land grant institution under the Morrill Act in 1872, establishing the Colleges of Agriculture and Engineering, the Graduate School, and military training programs.

The Morrill Act required military training at land grant institutions, leading Auburn to establish Army, Naval, and Air Force Reserve Officers' Training Corps programs in 1872.

Auburn's colleges and programs have prepared thousands of graduates who became astronauts, military leaders, corporate executives, scientists, engineers, lawyers, doctors, farmers, educators, and business owners.

The College of Agriculture has advanced the state's leading industries through animal nutrition research, plant and animal breeding, food safety technologies, environmental conservation, and farming innovations.

The Samuel Ginn College of Engineering has contributed to transportation systems, space exploration, national defense, industrial manufacturing, electrical power systems, wireless communications, and water and sanitation systems.

The House of Representatives commends Auburn University's College of Agriculture, Samuel Ginn College of Engineering, Graduate School, and Reserve Officers' Training Corps programs on their 150th Anniversary of service.
