SB1 Summary

• Repeals Sections 9-11-304, 13A-11-50, 13A-11-51, 13A-11-52, 13A-11-73, and 13A-11-74 of the Alabama Code, eliminating restrictions on firearm carrying in wildlife management areas, concealed weapons restrictions, and pistol permit requirements.

• Amends Section 13A-11-61.2 to maintain prohibitions on firearm possession in specific locations including police/sheriff stations, detention facilities, psychiatric facilities, courthouses, and athletic event venues, except for permit holders at school and professional athletic events.

• Exempts firearms stored in locked vehicles at sheriff's offices that issue pistol permits and allows employees to possess firearms in locked personal vehicles in parking areas if complying with storage requirements.

• Exempts active law enforcement officers and qualified retired law enforcement officers (meeting 10-year service and annual firearms training requirements) from firearm carrying prohibitions.

• Establishes violation of firearm restrictions as a Class C misdemeanor and becomes effective on the first day of the third month following passage and approval by the Governor.
