SB116 Summary

• Non-resident students whose parent or legal guardian is on active military duty and transferring to a military installation in Alabama may register for public K-12 school enrollment remotely prior to moving to the state.

• Parents or guardians must provide a copy of the official military transfer order and complete required enrollment forms and documentation, with proof of residency waived until the student physically arrives in Alabama.

• Proof of residency must be provided before the student begins attendance after physically transferring to the state.

• Local boards of education must offer the same opportunities for school assignment, course selection, and sporting activities to students enrolled under this program as those available to resident students.

• The act becomes effective on the first day of the third month following passage and approval by the Governor, or upon becoming law through other means.
