SB28 Summary

• Amends Alabama Code sections 31-2-1, 31-2-3, 31-2-55, 31-2-57, and 31-3-1 to include the Space National Guard as a component of the Alabama National Guard alongside the Army and Air National Guard.

• Expands the definition of "Armed Forces of the State of Alabama" to encompass army, air, and space National Guard units, the Alabama State Guard, and the Naval Militia.

• Updates references throughout militia statutes to include space forces in headquarters designations, officer selections, and dependent benefits for Space National Guard members.

• Makes the act contingent on federal creation of the Space National Guard in the National Defense Authorization Act by fiscal year 2025; the law becomes operative only upon that federal action.

• Becomes effective on the first day of the third month following passage and gubernatorial approval, or upon becoming law by other means.
