SB54 Summary

• Requires governmental entities that raze memorial buildings to maintain the original building name on any replacement structure or erect a marker memorializing the original name.

• Provides that waiver petitions are deemed denied if the Committee on Alabama Monument Protection fails to act within 90 days of application submission.

• Reduces penalties for violations of the Alabama Memorial Preservation Act from $25,000 to $5,000 per day of continued violation and authorizes the Attorney General to commence civil actions to enjoin violations.

• Requires the Alabama Historical Commission to commission and oversee design and construction of a life-size statue of civil rights leader John Lewis at the southeastern entrance to the Edmund Pettus Bridge, with authority to accept public and private donations.

• Becomes effective immediately upon passage and approval by the Governor.
