Commemorates the death of former Alabama Congressman Herbert Leon "Sonny" Callahan, Jr., who died June 24, 2021, at age 88 in Mobile, Alabama.

Callahan served in the Alabama House of Representatives (1971-1979), Alabama State Senate (1979-1984), and U.S. House of Representatives for Alabama's First Congressional District (1984-2003).

As U.S. Congressman, Callahan chaired two Appropriations Subcommittees: Foreign Operations and Energy and Water; after retiring from Congress in 2003, he founded a lobbying firm and worked in Washington, D.C., for 17 years.

Callahan was born September 11, 1932, to an Irish Catholic family of nine children, graduated from McGill Institute in 1950, attended the University of South Alabama, and served in the U.S. Navy before building a successful trucking and warehouse business.

Resolution honors Callahan's legacy as a beloved public servant known for bipartisan relationships, commonsense approach to problem-solving, and ability to connect with people from all walks of life; extends condolences to his surviving widow of 52 years, five children, one brother, one sister, and numerous grandchildren.
