The Alabama Legislature enacted the Alabama Public Transportation Act in 2018 (Act 2018-161) to establish a flexible funding program for public transportation and related infrastructure in the state.

The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is responsible for maintaining and administering the Alabama Public Transportation Trust Fund and appointing members to the Alabama Public Transportation Fund Advisory Committee.

Alabama is one of only three states without state funding for public transportation, making it ineligible to receive federal matching funds.

Public transportation provides benefits including cost savings, reduced road congestion, improved air quality, and increased business sales and residential property values.

The resolution directs the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs to appoint members to the Alabama Public Transportation Fund Advisory Committee and implement the Alabama Public Transportation Act to fund public transportation options in the state.
