• Applies exclusively to Shelby County sheriff qualifications and requirements.

• Requires sheriff candidates to possess a four-year college degree from a SACS-accredited or regionally-accredited institution, be at least 25 years old, and be a U.S. citizen with one year residency and voter registration in the county.

• Mandates 10 or more years of full-time law enforcement service certified by the Alabama Peace Officers' Standards and Training Commission, with a two-year limit on retirement/separation from active duty (or recertification requirement if exceeded).

• Prohibits individuals convicted of felony offenses in Alabama or in other jurisdictions where the offense would constitute a felony under Alabama law.

• Requires annually 20 hours of executive level continuing education approved by the Alabama Sheriff's Association, National Sheriff's Association, or equivalent recognized program.
