SB124 Summary

• Amends Alabama Code Section 15-25-3 to add human trafficking victims and witnesses to the list of individuals eligible to testify via closed circuit equipment outside the courtroom.

• Allows testimony of human trafficking victims and witnesses by closed circuit equipment without age restrictions, whereas current law limits this protection to child victims or protected persons in sex crimes.

• Testimony shall be taken outside the courtroom in the judge's chambers or another suitable location, with examination and cross-examination proceeding as though the witness were testifying in court.

• Requires the state to pay all costs incurred by the district attorney for closed circuit equipment setup and operation, with bills submitted to the state Comptroller for approval.

• Bill becomes effective on the first day of the third month following passage and gubernatorial approval.
