SB96 Summary

• Amends Section 6-5-549.1 of the Alabama Code to expand the definition of "health care provider" under the Alabama Medical Liability Act of 1996 to include emergency medical services personnel and emergency medical provider services as defined in Section 22-18-1(11) and (20).

• Extends medical liability protections and restrictions that apply to physicians, optometrists, chiropractors, and podiatrists to emergency medical services providers.

• Applies the amendments to all pending actions against health care providers at the time of the effective date, with a carve-out that the amendments do not apply to actions filed against podiatrists prior to March 7, 2006.

• Becomes effective on the first day of the third month following passage and approval by the Governor.
