Interstate 65 serves as the primary north-south travel corridor through Alabama, connecting the Port of Mobile, Gulf Coast beaches, Montgomery, Birmingham, and Huntsville.

Portions of Interstate 65 experience high traffic volumes and congestion during peak travel times and seasons, particularly near major cities, resulting in increased vehicle wear, emissions, drive times, and lost productivity.

The Alabama Department of Transportation is urged to study and prioritize improvements and additional capacity for Interstate 65 with the goal of achieving an appropriate number of lanes in each direction on all sections of the interstate.

The resolution passed the Senate on May 16, 2023, and the House of Representatives on May 23, 2023.
