HB140 Summary

• Increases the statute of limitations for prosecuting insurance fraud from 2 years to 7 years after an alleged violation is detected.

• Grants Department of Insurance Fraud Unit investigators full law enforcement powers, including authority to arrest and serve process for violations discovered during investigations.

• Expands investigator authority to enforce not only insurance fraud laws but also any other state law violations discovered during the course of an investigation.

• Requires Department of Insurance Fraud Unit investigators to meet minimum standards established by the Alabama Peace Officers' Standards and Training Commission.

• Effective date: October 1, 2024.
