AL HB200

Amends Section 22-19-85 of Alabama Code to require medical examiners to notify next of kin through law enforcement when retaining a deceased person's organs for testing to determine identification or cause of death.

Prohibits medical examiners from retaining a deceased person's organs for research or any purpose other than identification or cause/manner of death determination without notification and approval from next of kin.

Establishes violation of the retention prohibition as a Class C felony.

Excludes the bill from local funding requirements under Alabama Constitution Section 111.05 because it defines a new crime.

Becomes effective October 1, 2024.
