HB242 Summary

• Prohibits discrimination against active duty military members and their immediate families (spouses and children) in education, employment, housing, health insurance, public utilities, and public accommodations.

• Prevents educational institutions from charging increased application fees or tuition to servicemembers or their family members.

• Requires employers to treat returning servicemembers as having no break in employment for purposes of pension and health insurance benefits, and prohibits termination or denial of employment based on military status.

• Allows servicemembers and families to terminate residential and auto leases without penalty during active duty deployment, and requires creditors to defer default judgments and collection actions during deployment periods.

• Creates a private cause of action for violations and becomes effective October 1, 2024.
