HB301 Summary

• Adopts the Dentist and Dental Hygienist Compact as Article 5 of Chapter 9, Title 34, Code of Alabama 1975, establishing interstate licensing reciprocity for dentists and dental hygienists.

• Creates a joint Dentist and Dental Hygienist Compact Commission comprised of one commissioner from each participating state to oversee the compact and develop implementing rules.

• Allows qualified dentists and dental hygienists licensed in participating states to obtain a "compact privilege" to practice in other participating states without obtaining separate licenses, subject to each state's scope of practice requirements.

• Establishes requirements for state participation including criminal background checks, acceptance of specific national board exams and accredited dental education programs, continuing professional development requirements, and participation in a shared data system.

• Takes effect October 1, 2024, and requires a minimum of seven states to enact the compact before it becomes operative.
