HB46 Summary

• Amends Alabama Code to allow volunteer rescue squad vehicles to obtain permanent vehicle registration with a one-time fee instead of annual renewal, similar to state and municipal vehicles.

• Volunteer rescue squad vehicles must be incorporated under Alabama law, used exclusively for life-saving or rescue purposes without profit, and not rented, leased, or loaned to private parties to qualify for permanent registration.

• Permanent license plates for volunteer rescue squad vehicles shall display words indicating ownership by a volunteer rescue squad and include a registration number, with fees capped at the standard passenger plate rate.

• Registration fees and issuance fees collected are retained by the Department of Revenue to cover administrative costs for the permanent registration program.

• Effective October 1, 2024.
