The Alabama Scenic River Trail was established in 2008 and designated as a National Recreational Trail in 2009 and National Water Trail in 2012.

The trail originally extended 650 miles as the longest one-state river trail, running from Weiss Lake in North Alabama to Fort Morgan where Mobile Bay meets the Gulf of Mexico.

The Great Alabama 650 Race was held for its fifth year in 2023 with winners: Trey Reaves of Florence, Alabama (Overall and Male Solo, 6 days 1 hour 31 minutes), Salli O'Donnell of Fort Walton Beach, Florida (Female Solo, 6 days 6 hours 40 minutes), and Matt Taylor and Myles Sumerlin (Two-person Team, 7 days 3 hours 9 minutes).

The legislature commends the division winners for their achievement and skill, recognizing the race's role in promoting paddling activities in Alabama.

Copies of the resolution shall be sent to the Alabama Scenic River Trail office headquarters and to each division winner.
