AL SB12

Removes the provision that limited elected officials serving in another elected office to only receive full compensation if their compensation does not exceed annual earning limits, allowing retired elected officials to serve for full compensation without suspension of benefits.

Applies to retirees from the Teachers' Retirement System (TRS) and Employees' Retirement System (ERS) serving in elected public offices with the state, county, or incorporated municipality.

Maintains restrictions that retirees cannot accrue additional retirement benefits for the elected service and cannot receive both pension benefits and salary if their retirement was based on service as an elected official.

Preserves exception for local elected superintendents of education, who still cannot receive both pension benefits and salary unless compensation does not exceed the annual earning limit.

Becomes effective June 1, 2024.
