SB173 Summary

• Allows licensed physical therapists to conduct initial evaluations and screenings without a physician referral to determine if physical therapy is needed.

• Eliminates the requirement that physical therapy be practiced only upon referral from a physician, dentist, chiropractor, physician assistant, or certified registered nurse practitioner.

• Permits physical therapists to establish a plan of care and initiate physical therapy services as appropriate, with authority to refer patients to other providers as needed.

• Requires physical therapists to inform the health care provider rendering a diagnosis and provide a plan of care if a referral is received.

• Becomes effective October 1, 2024.
