AL SB179

Amends Section 17-3-30.1 of the Alabama Code to remove certain felonies from the list of crimes involving moral turpitude that disqualify individuals from voting.

Removes drug trafficking offenses (trafficking in cannabis, cocaine, and amphetamine/methamphetamine), burglary, robbery, and forgery from the crimes of moral turpitude list that cause voter disqualification.

Establishes a comprehensive, authoritative list of 42 specific felonies involving moral turpitude that remain as the only offenses for which conviction results in voting rights disqualification.

Requires that additional felonies may only be added to the moral turpitude list through legislative amendment to this section, preventing future expansion by other means.

Becomes effective October 1, 2024.
