SB284 Summary

• Requires Alabama public schools to provide research-based instruction on fentanyl prevention and drug poisoning awareness to students in grades 6 through 12, beginning with the 2024-2025 school year.

• Instruction must include prevention of fentanyl abuse and addiction, awareness of local school and community resources, and health education about substance use and youth substance abuse.

• Local education agencies may provide the instruction through various entities including higher education institutions, libraries, community organizations, religious organizations, public health agencies, mental health organizations, or school employees.

• Amends Section 16-40A-3 of the Code of Alabama 1975 to add fentanyl prevention as a required component of existing drug and alcohol education programs.

• Becomes effective June 1, 2024, and is cited as the Price Hornsby Act.
