SB41 Summary

• Chief Justice of Alabama Supreme Court and presiding judges of the Court of Criminal Appeals and Court of Civil Appeals shall be elected statewide at large in the 2026 and 2030 general elections.

• Associate justices of the Supreme Court and judges of the appellate courts shall be elected by district using State Board of Education Districts, with elections staggered between 2026 and 2030.

• Supreme Court associate justices in Places 1-4 and 5-6 shall be elected in 2030 from districts 1-4 and 5-6 respectively; Places 7-8 shall be elected in 2026 from districts 7-8.

• Court of Criminal Appeals and Court of Civil Appeals judges shall be elected from multi-district combinations, with staggered elections in 2026 and 2030.

• Bill repeals existing law regarding presiding judge selection for the Courts of Appeals and becomes effective January 1, 2025.
