AL SB54

Requires the State Textbook Committee to review all periodicals (magazines, newspapers, and journals) regularly used in public K-12 classroom instruction, defined as use at least once per month during the academic school year.

Authorizes the State Board of Education to develop guidelines for periodical reviews, including publishing statewide lists of vetted and approved periodicals.

Establishes that periodical review guidelines shall be separate and distinct from the existing State Textbook Review Process under Article 3 of Chapter 36 of Title 16, Code of Alabama 1975.

Becomes effective October 1, 2024.
