SB59 Summary

• Requires each local school board operating grades 9-12 to include cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) instruction in existing health education courses.

• Mandates instruction in the use of automated external defibrillators (AED) beginning with the 2024-2025 school year.

• Requires instruction to include hands-on psychomotor skills practice, not cognitive-only training, using standards prescribed by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.

• Stipulates that instructors providing CPR instruction must be certified as CPR instructors by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.

• Clarifies that students are not required to become certified in CPR or AED use, and authorizes the State Board of Education to adopt implementing rules.

• Effective October 1, 2024.
