AL SB64

Authorizes operation of registered off-road vehicles on county roads with a maximum speed limit of 55 mph if vehicle meets equipment and safety requirements including brakes, lights, horn, roll bar, seat belts, spark arrester, and muffler.

Requires off-road vehicle operators to be at least 16 years old with a valid driver's license and maintain liability insurance at minimum amounts required for standard motor vehicles.

Permits unregistered off-road vehicles to cross county roads at approximately 90-degree angles if they come to a complete stop, yield to oncoming traffic, and have illuminated headlights and taillights.

Exempts off-road vehicles from registration and equipment requirements when operated on private or public recreational trails, affiliated trails with safety programs, for agricultural purposes, or for wildlife management and emergency services.

Becomes effective October 1, 2024 and classifies violations as a misdemeanor offense.
