SB65 Summary

• Increases the statute of limitations for prosecuting insurance fraud from two years to seven years after an alleged violation is detected.

• Grants Department of Insurance investigators the powers vested in law enforcement officers, including arrest authority and the power to serve process.

• Expands investigator authority to enforce violations of other state laws discovered during the course of an insurance fraud investigation, not limited to insurance fraud violations alone.

• Requires Department of Insurance investigators to meet minimum standards established by the Alabama Peace Officers' Standards and Training Commission.

• Becomes effective on October 1, 2024.
