AL SB7

Authorizes sheriffs and county commissions or local police chiefs and city councils to contract with nonpublic schools (private, church, parochial, religious) and homeschooling entities to provide school resource officers as defined in Alabama Code Section 16-1-44.1.

Requires governmental entities to already provide school resource officers to all public K-12 schools in their jurisdiction before contracting with nonpublic schools; contracts automatically void if public school officers are discontinued.

Mandates nonpublic schools fully reimburse the county commission or city council for the full salary, benefits, and all other costs associated with each school resource officer provided.

Requires nonpublic schools to provide occurrence-based liability insurance as primary coverage in amounts consistent with the governmental entity's coverage, naming the county, sheriff and deputies (or municipality, chief of police and officers) as additional insureds.

Effective June 1, 2024; does not waive any governmental immunity or statutory damage caps for counties, cities, sheriffs, police chiefs, deputies, or officers.
