SB81 Summary

• Increases registrar daily salary from $80 to $100 per day for each day of service, effective October 1, 2024.

• Requires appointing authorities (Governor, Auditor, and Commissioner of Agriculture and Industries) to work to ensure board membership reflects the racial demographics of the state.

• Clarifies that registrars are not county or state employees except for limited purposes including Social Security protection, health insurance eligibility after 16 years of service, and treatments as equals with other employees for Social Security benefits.

• Requires boards of registrars to be open on working days during courthouse hours or establish and maintain regular public hours with at least one registrar present.

• Amends Sections 17-3-2 and 17-3-5 of the Code of Alabama 1975 with technical revisions to update code language to current style.
