SB88 Summary

• Increases the Alabama Firefighters' Personnel Standards and Education Commission membership from seven to nine members.

• Adds two new appointed positions: one certified firefighter experienced in mentorship and training of aspiring firefighters (appointed by Presiding Officer of the Senate), and one certified volunteer firefighter experienced in mentorship and training of aspiring volunteer firefighters (appointed by Presiding Officer of the Senate).

• Changes language from "nominate" to "appoint" for firefighter association positions and requires all appointees to be confirmed by the Senate before becoming commission members.

• Requires appointing authorities to coordinate appointments to ensure commission membership reflects the racial, gender, geographic, urban, rural, and economic diversity of Alabama.

• Becomes effective October 1, 2024.
