SJR20 Summary

• Recognizes and commends the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) on its 50th anniversary in 2025, founded in 1975 from the merger of three organizations serving state legislatures.

• NCSL operates as a bipartisan organization with objectives to advance state legislature effectiveness and independence, foster interstate communication and cooperation, and ensure states a strong voice in the federal system.

• Alabama has been involved with NCSL since its inception, with former Senate Secretary McDowell Lee serving as a founding member of the NCSL Executive Committee from 1975-1978 and as President of the American Society of Legislative Clerks and Secretaries from 1974-1975.

• Multiple Alabama legislators and staff members have served with NCSL over the past 50 years, including former Representative Michael Box who served as NCSL President from 1996-1997 (the only Alabamian to hold that position).

• Directs the Alabama Senate Secretary to transmit a copy of this resolution to the National Conference of State Legislatures.
