SJR75 Summary

• Commemorates the 40th anniversary of the Alabama Indian Affairs Commission (AIAC), established by Act No. 84-257 signed into law by Governor Wallace on May 7, 1984.

• Recognizes that the AIAC represents more than 35,000 American Indian families in Alabama and serves nine recognized tribes including Machis Lower Creek Indian Tribe, Echota Cherokee Tribe, Poarch Band of Creek Indians, and six others.

• Acknowledges the commission's mandate to address the cultural and sociological needs of Alabama's Indian population and to serve as a liaison between state and federal governments and Alabama's tribal communities.

• Honors the AIAC for maintaining a service, advocacy, and liaison role while helping Indian people preserve their cultural and ethnic heritage while participating in the broader Alabama community.

• Passed the Senate on May 2, 2024 and the House of Representatives on May 7, 2024.
