HB204 Summary

• Adds certain trucks to existing exceptions from weight limits on Alabama highways, including log trucks, asphalt delivery trucks, and concrete mixing trucks operating within specified distances of home base.

• Allows vehicle operators to verify portable scale accuracy by requesting accompaniment to certified platform scales within 10 highway miles, or independently proceeding to platform scales within 100 highway miles with results submitted within 48 hours.

• Removes authority for enforcement officers to require vehicle operators to drive to stationary scales for weight enforcement; portable scales become primary enforcement tool with operator verification rights.

• Limits detention of vehicles to no more than three at any one time when using portable scales for enforcement.

• Becomes effective October 1, 2025.
