AL HB43

Amends Alabama Code Section 15-18-8 to increase the maximum sentence eligible for split sentencing from 20 years to 30 years for Class A, B, and C felonies (except sex offenses involving children).

Establishes three sentencing options: confinement up to 3 years with suspended remainder for sentences up to 15 years; 3-5 years confinement for sentences 15-20 years; and minimum 10 years confinement for sentences 20-30 years, with remainder suspended and probation imposed.

Prohibits minimum confinement periods under the 20-30 year category from being served in county jails and prevents courts from suspending or altering the ordered minimum confinement period.

Retains court authority to suspend remaining minimum sentence portions and modify probation conditions at any time during the defendant's service of the minimum sentence.

Becomes effective October 1, 2025.
