HB573 Summary

• Amends Section 45-27-234 of the Code of Alabama 1975 to update minimum qualifications for the Sheriff of Escambia County, effective June 1, 2025.

• Reduces the allowable time gap for law enforcement separation from two consecutive years to one year, allowing former officers to qualify if they have been separated for no more than one year from their qualification date.

• Requires that if an individual has ever retired from active law enforcement, they must have three or more years of full-time post-retirement law enforcement service prior to qualifying.

• Mandates elected sheriffs attend a minimum of 12 hours annually of executive level continuing education approved by the Alabama Sheriff's Association, National Sheriff's Association, or other recognized law enforcement executive education programs.

• Updates terminology throughout from "person" to "individual" for consistency.
