SB1 Summary

• Creates the Maryann Leonard Educators' On-The-Job Injury Act establishing a Public Education Employee Injury Compensation Program, Trust Fund, and Board to provide compensation to full-time public education employees injured on the job.

• Program covers employees of public school boards, charter schools, community colleges, and other designated educational institutions with injuries arising out of and in the course of employment, excluding mental injuries without physical cause.

• Establishes a Public Education Employee Injury Compensation Board comprising five appointed members plus the Director of the Workers' Compensation Division, with initial appointments by July 1, 2025.

• Program begins accepting injury claims no later than October 1, 2026, with workers' compensation benefits paid from the Trust Fund in accordance with Alabama Workers' Compensation Act statutes, provisions, and calculation methods.

• Amends existing law to clarify sick leave provisions for public education employees, including one day per month accrual, transferability between employers, and continued pay for 90 working days during on-the-job injury absence.
