SB32 Summary

• Creates a definition of "machinegun" in Alabama law covering any firearm that shoots or can be readily restored to shoot more than one shot automatically by a single trigger function, parts intended for converting firearms to machineguns, and component combinations that can assemble into a machinegun.

• Establishes mandatory enhanced sentences for murder committed with a machinegun: life imprisonment without parole for persons 18 and older, or life imprisonment or life without parole for persons under 18.

• Establishes mandatory enhanced sentences for manslaughter committed with a machinegun as a Class A felony with mandatory life imprisonment without possibility of parole.

• Establishes mandatory enhanced sentences for assault in the first degree committed with a machinegun as a Class A felony with mandatory life imprisonment, and assault in the second degree committed with a machinegun as a Class A felony with mandatory life imprisonment.

• Becomes effective October 1, 2025; passed by the Alabama Senate on February 13, 2025 with a vote of 30-1.
